A quick switch Joy1/Joy2 option +1 for this. They should've added this to the Mini a long time ago!

For the VIC-20 Mega-Cart support: I checked in the VICE Manual and found something helpful VIC20 cartridge resources: MegaCartNvRAMfilename String specifying the filename of the MegaCart NvRAM image. MegaCartNvRAMWriteBack Boolean, if true write back the NvRAM image file automatically, incase the RAM contents changed, when detaching or quitting the emulator. VIC20 cartridge command-line options: -cartmega <name> Specify Mega-Cart extension ROM name -mcnvramfile <name> Set Mega-Cart NvRAM filename -mcnvramwriteback +mcnvramwriteback Enable/Disable Mega-Cart NvRAM writeback -cartfe <name> vice-emu.sourceforge.net/vice_7.html#SEC147

I just bought the C64 maxi couple weeks ago after I bumped into a review by accident. First impressions were great. Just few hours ago we had couple of families visiting and we had a trip back to the late 80's together. I'd say that has been great for the price. Unfortunately the quality of the joystick is quite poor and I had to open it after few hours to reattach the stick back on, since the screw had felled off. Now I'm worried that the stick breaks down at some point permanently. I would like to see my Speedlink Competition Pro working on the C64 maxi. This way you could add more and better quality joystics and play against someone. Ace2, IK and IK+ among many other games would benefit from this. There seems to be a support for Speedlink Competition Pro Extra on the C64mini. Now if the joystick should work with the maxi, then I'm thrilled.
Never mind. The Speedlink Competition Pro seems to work just fine!

There is a way of starting THEC64 in 60 Hz by pressing POWER for 6 s, but there is no way of starting it in 50 Hz AFAIK. I think one should be able to force THEC64 into 50 Hz mode even if EDID says it does not work, because I have HP-screens with this problem: i.e. 50 Hz works, but THEC64 does not recognize it. Most games I have are for 50 Hz PAL and should go in the right speed.
Now I could get my THEC64 to run in 50 Hz mode by using a neighbors TV, and then move it to my monitors. There are old HDMI TVs in PAL countries that only handle 50 Hz and those might also send an EDID that THEC64 can't interpret. I might want to switch to 60 Hz, but then it would be difficult to switch back using my monitors.

My Maxi wish list:
1) Ability to print to a file (printer support not likely) 2) Emulation of 1351 mouse with a USB mouse 3) Drop to Linux shell to manage the USB stick and edit CJM files (in something like nano). Alternatively, create a file manager and text editor within the menu system. 4) Support for an Ethernet dongle to (a) access BBSs via telnet and (b) access the USB file system over FTP. 5) Option to remove splash screen and replace it with (a) black screen, (b) basic screen without any writing on it, (c) progress bar. 6) Ability to remap joystick buttons for the menu system 7) Support for accurate disk emulation when using .d81 images (presently does not work) 8) Support for two or more drives 9) Ability to take a screenshot and save it to the USB drive

I purchased the c64 maxi a week ago and I must say that it is really well done, it is compatible with all the software and it is very configurable.
A serious lack I find it in the tap files and in the management of games that use 2 sides of the cassette that cannot be used. Of course you can join two tap files but they don't work well. I wish this problem was fixed. If possible manage the tap file like the d64 which work very well. Thanks and greetings

I am wondering if Retro Games will add the capability for a second disk drive (device #9). I am using the TheC64 to learn 6502 machine coding and having a second drive would be useful (not absolutely necessary, I agree).

I second most of the ideas here, additionally, what I think could be nice to have in a future update is some kind of "on-the-fly" editing of the settings that are in the CJM files (if it actually edits a CJM file or not, I guess could depend, but at least the option to easily try out files with different settings, on the fly)

Mentioned in a previous post, the ability for a soft/hard reset while in Basic gets my vote also. BTW, it took a bit of time to get my TheC64 here in the U.S. but many thanks go out to grooves.land in Germany for making it available. I haven't had this much fun with a computer since 1985!!!

I'd also vote for access to up to four disk devices for using things like the Pascal environments. (Though even two drives would be great). And ... how about a C128 mode? Vice already has an emulator for that.

Vice already has an emulator for that. I have put in a request for drive 9 support as I'm a big GEOS fan. That doesn't mean it's going to definitely happen, of course, but I have a direct line and will regularly feed back people's issues, concerns and comments. Regards, Shaun.

My wishlist for the next firmware after 1.4.2: - Support all joysticks and gamepads that work with HID in Windows and Linux.
A default.cjm-file that would be used as a base for filename codes or file specific CJM-files. (Now supported since firmware 1.2.0.)- Support USB serial ports that would be accessible as e.g. modems connected to the VICE-emulated user port. This would enable connecting to e.g. hardware and Internet.
- Support phones and Microbit that emulate USB memory sticks when connected to computers. This should make it possible to update time and e.g. weather data by reading a file in a diskette that is updated by the phone. Several partitions should be handled.
- Change or add diskette mechanism that also works for cartridges. (Supported on THEC64 since firmware 1.3.2, but not on MINI.)
- Support for paddles and C64 mouse (they could use analog USB-joystick, or mouse).
- THEC64 MINI [and THEC64] should be able to format USB flash drives, since it's difficult to do on Windows 10 w/o third party software.
- Support for Swedish/Finnish keyboard, and also Danish and Norwegian, i.e. Nordic keyboard (all C64 keys are on the same place on the Nordic keyboards) in THEC64 MINI.
Caps Lock should work the same way as SHIFT LOCK on the real C64. (Now supported since firmware 1.3.2.)
- Num Lock on a standalone numeric keyboard should work as on a full keyboard, i.e. be off at when first connected, or maybe remember state.
- A standalone numeric keyboard should have joystick buttons A, B, C, as 0 = A, + = B and - = C.
- VIC20 emulator should be built in, since it has the same keyboard as the C64. It should be possible to configure VIC20 memory banks in the CJM-file. (Supported on THEC64 since firmware 1.3.2, but not on MINI.)
- Save to tape should be possible, i.e. there should be a record button in the tape user interface, but it should be possible to mark tapes as read only by e.g. some code in the filename.
- It should be possible to type in the cassette counter, because now it is difficult to stop winding at the right count.
- The CP/M cartridge should be supported, i.e. they could include the Z80 emulator from later VICE 2.4 versions since 2015.
- It should be possible to type all characters that you can type on the real C64 keyboard using the Virtual keyboard. One could use button B as making a marked key stick, and then the held down keys would be released automatically when the first sensible combination that types a key or changes graphics mode has been reached. It is important to be able to type INST (SHIFT+DEL) and SHIFT+RETURN. These can work sporadically now if you mark SHIFT and press Fire and the joystick button C/A at exactly the same time.
- It should be able to force THEC64 into 50 Hz mode even if EDID says it does not work, since I have screens were 50 Hz works anyway. There is a way of forcing THEC64 to start in 60 Hz by pressing POWER for 6 s.

And ... how about a C128 mode? Vice already has an emulator for that. The C128 had two screens and when you run the VICE C128 emulator (x128) you get two windows. If they have a C128 emulator on THEC64 or THEC64 MINI they would need to fix a way to switch screen, because I don't think having windows on the screen would be a good experience. Also the C128 had a different keyboard than C64 and VIC20. How would you type the extra characters? Perhaps using an extended Virtual keyboard.

How about adding JiffyDOS?. It should be fairly easy, as it's just a kernal/disc file swap. That and the REU support and I'm in C64 heaven!.

I have requested this too as again I'm well used to using JiffyDOS. It would be good if JiffyDOS support could go hand-in-hand with support for two drives, like 8 is 1541 and 9 is 1571 or 1581. Regards, Shaun.

Please share with the community the updates you would like to feature on theC64 Mini or theC64 Maxi. I have only 3, which are as follows: - Options for Full top/bottom borders. So that on some programs that use sprites inside the top and bottom borders can be 100% visible. Take Galencia for example. On a C64C the sprites on the top + bottom borders can been seen in full. On theC64 Mini, only half/less than half the sprites are displayed. I also have the same problem when playing games created with The Shoot Em Up Construction Kit. No score panel can be seen. - Options for SID type. There are programs which has music designed for new SID as well as OLD. - As well as being able to load .D64 images, maybe add support for loading .TAP and .CRT images. TAP for nostalgic tape loading, CRT for RGCD games, SuperFluid, etc. Spannernick - PLEASE add your Wishlist and you never know,Retro Games might be watching, I hope.. Use SCALE (or SCALING) in your TV settings.

Most wanted:
* REU option (makes workaround unnecessary) * vice debugger / monitor * File manager ( eg copy files inbetween d64 files) * Normal file manager * Cursor movement in the C64 menus also by cursor keys (not only o, p ...etc) * pdf Viewer (or a least a normal text viewer) for reference while programming / easy to reach by short cut * WLAN port (adding a wifi usb stick) for sftp share -- so that we do not always have to copy all by usb * Cross assembler interaction ... coding on my linux box and sending the code over tcp port to the machine for execution * Swap joysticks shortcut * Stable joystick handling (sometimes I need to unplug and replug the joysticks to get them running) * SID player that can read SID files located on the USB stick additional Hardware:
* USB Hub for real cartridge's and real floppy drives / printers / real c64 joysticks ... would be really great

I would really like to use the cursors in the menus... it would be so much more intuitive for me, and it would make it nicer to use the machine without the joystick while messing around in classic mode.
Also - having the ability to map a second drive as device 9 would be helpful if possible.

Thanks, dear mate ! I supported the project already quite soon after start -- I hope that the team will go on and even bring up once a The C64 II, where some hardware parts are improved ; maybe even a more realistic keyboard (with caps-lock etc). I would again support the team. To get real C64 hardware running, they could think about interfaces to several components, maybe even in-system ones -- SIDs etc ... anyway, as long the community is still interested I hope they will improve. And they should have one leg in the vice team -- also a chance for them to improve. Cheers and have a good day !

Hi guys,
This is definitely my final week at RGL. I'm happy that we've got v1.5.1 firmware over the line before I left. The only thing to do for me is to write some revisions to THEC64 manual to reflect the new features from 1.4.2 and 1.5.1.
I'll keep an eye on this thread and pass any good suggestions back to the guys. But it's been a good six months and I'm happily now moving back to being a developer.
Regards,
Shaun.

Yes, we tried to implement joystick toggle but that just seemed impractical. The more direct "I want this joystick to be port 1 now" worked much better as a user experience. Regards, Shaun.
