It's been a while since writing here the last time...
But for the topics itself.
I recently tried playing the Commodore 64 versions of Hero Quest and it's expansion pack, The return of the witch lord, on TheC64 Maxi. The games should feature the ability to save and load your player name and status on disk or tape (depending on the version you are playing), the idea being that when you complete missions in the game, you can bring along your earlier gold, items, weapons etc. for the next adventures. This would be especially important considering the expansion pack, as the missions on that are harder than in the main game and the manual recommends to buff up your characters in earlier missions before playing the expansion. However, I have encountered problems with that.
While it is true you could just use the savestate function built-in on TheC64, it doesn't solve the problem with the expansion pack, as loading that nullifies the character data and in the original, you were supposed to load that from disk or tape to restore it between the main game and the expansion, that not being possible with the savestate itself. But attempting to use the disk/tape save option has problems.
-The disk version: Selecting the "Player select" option, after selecting a character, you have the save/load options. It then seems to prompt for a separate disk for saving/loading, after that prompts to change back to the game disk. It seems to save properly, but every time I attempt to load previously saved data from the disk, I get a promptsayin "Disk error". I have enabled AccurateDisk and disabled FastLoad, and tested multiple disk images, always with the same end result.
-The tape version: After being fed up with fighting the disk-based versions, I tried using tape-based images instead. They seemed to work fine and dandy up until attempting to save to a tape. I got a game prompt telling me to switch to a save tape and changed that in, then got a prompt telling me to press record and play on the deck. The problem is, the virtual tape deck controls don't have a record button! So I cannot save because of that.
Has anyone managed to make this work on their stock TheC64? If they have, how? I'd prefer the stock firmware over PCUAE or other customized firmware solutions.
Thanks in advance for any ideas and help!
