I'm terribly new here, but did get a copy of Game Tool 36b and figured out the basics. A simple questions -- It appears to me that the Maxi determines that a firmware should be installed in the firmware filename number is greater than the currently installed firmware. I am assuming that the firmware created with the tool will not update that value so that later updates will still install properly?

Is there a way to add a two disk game to the carousel like Steel Ranger? Not really. You'd have to search the net for a 1581 or Easyflash version.

Thanks for the info. I used steel ranger as an example. Cool. Back to your original question: Multi-Disk games are not really possible in the carousel.

Just added the game fine.. I've done what you said. I've downloaded the files in .png format and added them again. Still the files arn't adding to the folders. Only thing that adds is the .vsf file into the game folders. Can you send me the files you are trying to add so I can have a look at them?

TCMGT has to convert pngs itself and it don't always work with all of them. LAWOFTHEWEST-00.png,LAWOFTHEWEST-01.png need to be added to the tool. Do you have any png's that wont convert? If so then can you please send them to me so I can have a look at them? I just discovered that when adding some 32 bit png files with the correct image resolution then the number of colors was not reduced to 256. That is fixed now. Will be sending out RC1 shortly.

I just sent out Release Candidate 1 of the tool. Hoping for a release of version 1.0 this week I have fixed a small issue where a 32 bit color .png with the correct resolution was not reduced to 256 colors. I would recommend that you do a game backup and import it to the tool again. Perhaps rename the old games folder to game_old and then import. I saved 3 meg of disk space on the maxi by doing this.

How does one gain access to this tool? I'd like to try making a custom carousel of games for my system.
Thanks

Not sure if these questions should go here ,or if a separate thread should be made. Apologies in advance if I should create a new thread for these questions. 1. Is it possible by the end users to change the list of genres? I always had a specific set of genres that I use for my emulators, Ultimate64 Elite, and others such as Action Games, Arcade Games, Role-playing Games, TV Gameshows, Card Games, etc. I'd love to be able to use my personal categories for game genres if possible. 2. Can we somehow use multi disk games? If not, is there any chance that an eventual future release might figure out a way to allow multi side/disk images to be used? 3. Can game data be saved while playing a game off the carousel? For example a save game in an RPG, or a high score list that an image has high score saving on? I'm guessing yes as I can seem to save my character in the built in Epyx classic "Temple of Apshai Trilogy". 4. Finally, is it possible to change the default SID music that plays when the carousel is running? I guess thats all the questions I have so far. Thanks again for creating such a great tool.

I believe the game list is set by the internal NAND, but the developer could better answer that. 2. No; currently the work around is to use .d81 / CRT replacements or look for "1 disk cracks". 3. You would have to be able to write back to the disk for many games to work, so it should behave the same way. 4. I believe the dev said that might be possible in the future.

Question 2... I use Tap files, cassette image of the game if the game is on more then one disk,I just load the game and save a snapshot of it there,it might take longer to load the next part but at least the game is in the Carousel. Now my question... Does the SID changer work, are you able to use a different SID like from 6581 to 8580..? I have never tried it,I tried changing the SID in one of the TSG files but it did not change it.

A .d81 game that is added then compressed with the tool to a .gz will not run on both The64 or vice. Removing the .gz from the .tsg and ensuring the game has the .d81 extension in the game folder works on The64 but still fails when tested on vice.

Does the SID option really work? Can you switch from 6581 to 8580 and get an audible difference or is it only for compatibility? I really have no interest in the carousel but when its actually capable of enabling options the original firmware cant do then im all ears. Great work nonetheless!

What about using innext controller? The tool only lets you use the standard joystick. Is there a way to change that?

Anybody had issues yet with the c64 mini not booting up? I shut it down after using the tool version 1.0.1 to add/remove games. But now it doesn't boot up. My hdmi switch is reacting when I plug in power but the led stays of and there is no video output. I think it is stuck upon boot?

Seems my nandb was corrupt for some reason, I managed to recover it from the backup made by the tool and it is now booting again

and it broke down again... I managed to boot it up 2 times after firmware update and now I am back again to no led and no video output after closing the case again... there seems to be something fishy with my last firmware update made by the tool...

Things to try/verify via the UART: - Show the output from the boot process. Does it get stuck in uboot for example, or in the early linux initrd phase because the filesystem on nandb is damaged, or does it fully boot into Linux?
- If it does fully boot into Linux, at the command prompt, check if the64 is running:
# ps | grep the64 If it is running, kill it (twice) and then manually run it:
# killall the64 # killall the64 # the64 If there's something wrong it will complain about it

Could you send me the firmware update that is bricking your box so I can have a look at it. Also send me the log file from the tool located on your USB. If I understand you correctly then you did: 1. Added games to the tool 2. Made a FW with your new games 3. Did a FW update with this FW on your box 4. You box booted find with the new games twice for so to drop dead? (Black screen etc.) 5. You flash your nandb to your box and now everything works fine. (Even with multiple reboots?) 6. You flashed the same FW again (created by the tool) that bricked your box in the first place. 7. Your box booted fine again with the new games 2 times for so to drop dead again. (Black screen) Is this correct? Could you run the command "df -h" and share your output. The best is if you can do this while your box wont boot. (after you flashed the FW)

Oke, I think I figured out what is going on.
This morning I took it with me to work to restore the nandb in my break, but when I arrived it worked again. When I got home from work it didn't boot (again).
When I did my first adding games with UART last year I broke the connector to the FEL button. I resoldered it and everything seemed fine. What I suspect was the case, is that my daughter of 11 months was handling it hard and the soldered cable started to come loose and short with the other cable (shorting the cable and simulating a button press of the FEL button). When I took it out. All problems with booting seems to be gone.
Not sure how the boot process should look with FEL pressed, but the boot screen looked normal with UART while I was having the problem.
I'm going to be testing it some more, but I think this was causing it to fail, and not the tool
